How to Plan Your Laboratory ClassIf you have a chemistry course you know that the first class is a history of chemistry. This lesson does a good job of introducing the course concepts and giving you a good overview of how the course works. It also provides information on how to carry out the practical lessons from the course.The class lesson that really gives you an idea of the practical lessons of the course is the lab. Students usually have two weeks of labs to complete. This lesson is the most important, because it allows students to put to use all the knowledge they learn in the lab. Knowing what you will be doing, and how to do it, is part of the learning process, and you need to know this information before you begin the lab.Here is the best way to plan your lab based on the lesson. It is important to write everything down before hand so that you can follow along and get all the information that you need before you start.When you begin the lab, turn on the circuit breakers. Do not run any fumes into the room. Move your materials in and out of the lab. Start with the materials that are most dangerous, the most difficult, and the ones that you know you will have to replace. This way you are not wasting time and your time has not been wasted either.You will have to fill in your new parts and do some reprogramming to your old parts. You should not use the new parts unless you have read them all, because there is always a chance for your computer to stop working. You also do not want to run over your lifetime supply of an element you are working with, so make sure that you fill it up before you start using the new parts.Now you will know what all of the elements are and they will be working together to create the new element. You can either add the new element to the worksheet that is already filled with the other elements, or you can put the new element in the work sheet and label it. Make sure that you do not mix the new element with any of the old elements, or else you might end up with a mixture that will not work as well as it should. Label the new element accordingly so that you know what it is.Now that you know all of the information on the chemical reaction, all you have to do is press the start button and wait for the reaction to happen. When it is done, you will be able to look at what is happening in the chemical equation and see how it is working. Often, these final college application essays are the toughest essays to tackle, assuming that you already exerted significant effort on essay-writing this winter. So, whats the best way to buckle down and hammer out a great essay when you have little time to do so? Here is a five-step approach to quickly (and effectively!) write a college application essay: 1. Read the prompt This may sound like a painfully obvious first step, but many applicants will write essays that do not consider the prompt. Sometimes this is simply negligence or a misunderstanding. Other times, applicants are set on writing something that they believe will help their candidacy, even if it doesnt really answer the question. Unfortunately, failing to address the prompt in your response will never help your application! [RELATED: 4 Ways to Find Application Essay Writing Inspiration] So, we encourage you to carefully read the promptand then read it again, and consider what the admissions committee is looking for in the answer. (Hint: the prompt is likely not a trick question!) 2. Think about your answer Now that you understand what the prompt is asking of you, its time to think about your answer and organize your thoughts. There are several ways to approach this: you could write an outline, do some freewriting, etc. You should approach this in whichever way allows you to get the best results. Some prompts, such as the ones that ask why you want to attend a particular school, will require doing some extra research. While it may seem more efficient to just dive right into writing the essays themselves, writing an outline and doing some research will, in reality, make the essay-writing process so much easier. Besides, youre applying to these programs because you want to attend them, so this process should be exciting! 3. Write! Dont just sit there staring at the blank page. Start writing and accept that the first draft is not going to be perfect; it never is. However, if you have already written an outline and organized your thoughts, as we suggested above, the first draft should be pretty good! We also suggest that you dont worry about the word limit in early drafts. Give yourself plenty of room to flesh out your ideas. [RELATED: The Importance of Writing Skills] 4. Rewrite! To ensure a completely coherent essay, you may wish to write two to four iterations before submitting. After you have written a solid first draft, set it aside for a couple of days before going back in to edit it. (Of course, how many days you have to set your essay aside will depend largely on how far in advance you started working on your application!) Even if youre running short on time, set your essay aside for at least 24 hours, which will allow you to come back to it with a fresh perspective. You will be more likely to notice what is missing and where your writing is lacking clarity. Ask a parent, friend, counselor, or someone else whose advice you trust to provide some feedback. They will likely notice leaps in logic or areas lacking clarity in your writing that you failed to see! 5. Trim and polish Once you finally have a draft that youre happy with, one that conveys everything that you want it to say, you should give it a good polish. Remember, you should adhere to any word limits required by the college/university, as failure to follow directions is seen as unsavory by admissions officers. (Often, youll have no choice but to remain within the word count because the online platform will not let you enter more than is allowed.) Introvert Whisperer / Dealing With Passive-Aggressive Behavior - Introvert Whisperer Dealing With Passive-Aggressive Behavior I had someone ask me a great question this week. “What do you do with a passive-aggressive person that makes snotty remarks, sighs and rolls their eyes?”   I’d love to hear what your solutions are to this question. While I think most of the time you simply ignore someone who does this, you do have to think through whether or not that type of behavior should be allowed to continue. It’s not productive and as the recipient, it feels disrespectful.   It does nothing to solve problems or build a relationship.   All it does is repel you as its not comfortable being around someone who does this.   Eventually, it will negatively impact how you do your work. People that are passive-aggressive don’t feel empowered to directly confront concerns they have â€" for whatever reason.   Maybe they don’t know how to comfortably address issues they have with you or are concerned that if they do, they will damage the relationship.   The deal is, they don’t realize they are damaging the relationship by their behavior. Here are a couple of my suggestions: Act confused and ask for clarity. “I’m confused.   By your reaction, it seems something has you upset but I’m not sure I know what it is.   Could you let me know?” Be transparent and describe what is going on. “I can tell from the eye rolling you’re doing that you must disagree.   Let me know if you see issues that I may not be aware of.” Or “I doubt that your comment was designed to really solve a problem.   Do we have a problem that needs to be discussed?” Passive-aggressive behavior is a learned behavior.   That means that a person that does this sort of thing may not stop what they are doing.   I do think you train people on how you want to be treated and if you allow someone to do something repeatedly to you that goes against your values, it will continue and get worse.   They will think twice before attempting it with you again if you confront the behavior in a constructive way. No, it would be great if everyone were upbeat and happy each day you go to work, but that’s not always possible.   I hope this gives you a few ideas if or when this happens to you. ACT-English Section Overview Timing: 75 questions in 45 minutes 15 questions every 9 minutes Skills tested:Usage/grammar and rhetorical skills B. Strategies to employ General strategies for the ACT-English section Don’t waste too much time on any single question. Every question is worth the same amount, regardless of difficulty. Go mostly in order. Answer all questions in a section before moving on to the next one. Strategy for usage/grammar questions Read each answer in the context of the sentence. Eliminate answers that are obviously wrong. Look for patterns in the remaining answers. If no obvious grammatical issues in the remaining choices, choose the most concise, to-the-point answer. Strategy for rhetorical skills questions When a question asks you to put something into context of the paragraph/passage, quickly read over the paragraph (or skim the passage) and be able to sum it up in a single sentence. Clear: The waiter served a dinner roll that was well buttered to the woman. 3. Transitional phrases - the ACT loves transitional words and phrases.
