How to Plan Your Laboratory Class
How to Plan Your Laboratory ClassIf you have a chemistry course you know that the first class is a history of chemistry. This lesson does a good job of introducing the course concepts and giving you a good overview of how the course works. It also provides information on how to carry out the practical lessons from the course. The class lesson that really gives you an idea of the practical lessons of the course is the lab. Students usually have two weeks of labs to complete. This lesson is the most important, because it allows students to put to use all the knowledge they learn in the lab. Knowing what you will be doing, and how to do it, is part of the learning process, and you need to know this information before you begin the lab. Here is the best way to plan your lab based on the lesson. It is important to write everything down before hand so that you can follow along and get all the information that you need before you start. When you begin the lab, turn on the circuit breakers. Do not run any fumes into the room. Move your materials in and out of the lab. Start with the materials that are most dangerous, the most difficult, and the ones that you know you will have to replace. This way you are not wasting time and your time has not been wasted either. You will have to fill in your new parts and do some reprogramming to your old parts. You should not use the new parts unless you have read them all, because there is always a chance for your computer to stop working. You also do not want to run over your lifetime supply of an element you are working with, so make sure that you fill it up before you start using the new parts. Now you will know what all of the elements are and they will be working together to create the new element. You can either add the new element to the worksheet that is already filled with the other elements, or you can put the new element in the work sheet and label it. Make sure that you do not mix the new element with any of the old elements, or else you might end up with a mixture that will not work as well as it should. Label the new element accordingly so that you know what it is.Now that you know all of the information on the chemical reaction, all you have to do is press the start button and wait for the reaction to happen. When it is done, you will be able to look at what is happening in the chemical equation and see how it is working. The next lesson on the lab will be about filling up your lifetime supply of a chemical and how to read the equation.

5 Quick Tips for Writing a College Application Essay
5 Quick Tips for Writing a College Application Essay The following is a guest post written by Anna Carapellotti of Admissionado, a premier college admissions consulting company focused on helping students get into their dream schools. Often, these final college application essays are the toughest essays to tackle, assuming that you already exerted significant effort on essay-writing this winter. So, whats the best way to buckle down and hammer out a great essay when you have little time to do so? Here is a five-step approach to quickly (and effectively!) write a college application essay: 1. Read the prompt This may sound like a painfully obvious first step, but many applicants will write essays that do not consider the prompt. Sometimes this is simply negligence or a misunderstanding. Other times, applicants are set on writing something that they believe will help their candidacy, even if it doesnt really answer the question. Unfortunately, failing to address the prompt in your response will never help your application! [RELATED: 4 Ways to Find Application Essay Writing Inspiration] So, we encourage you to carefully read the promptand then read it again, and consider what the admissions committee is looking for in the answer. (Hint: the prompt is likely not a trick question!) 2. Think about your answer Now that you understand what the prompt is asking of you, its time to think about your answer and organize your thoughts. There are several ways to approach this: you could write an outline, do some freewriting, etc. You should approach this in whichever way allows you to get the best results. Some prompts, such as the ones that ask why you want to attend a particular school, will require doing some extra research. While it may seem more efficient to just dive right into writing the essays themselves, writing an outline and doing some research will, in reality, make the essay-writing process so much easier. Besides, youre applying to these programs because you want to attend them, so this process should be exciting! 3. Write! Dont just sit there staring at the blank page. Start writing and accept that the first draft is not going to be perfect; it never is. However, if you have already written an outline and organized your thoughts, as we suggested above, the first draft should be pretty good! We also suggest that you dont worry about the word limit in early drafts. Give yourself plenty of room to flesh out your ideas. [RELATED: The Importance of Writing Skills] 4. Rewrite! To ensure a completely coherent essay, you may wish to write two to four iterations before submitting. After you have written a solid first draft, set it aside for a couple of days before going back in to edit it. (Of course, how many days you have to set your essay aside will depend largely on how far in advance you started working on your application!) Even if youre running short on time, set your essay aside for at least 24 hours, which will allow you to come back to it with a fresh perspective. You will be more likely to notice what is missing and where your writing is lacking clarity. [RELATED: Top 10 Essay Editing Tips] The rewriting stage is the time to ask for the input of others, as well. Ask a parent, friend, counselor, or someone else whose advice you trust to provide some feedback. They will likely notice leaps in logic or areas lacking clarity in your writing that you failed to see! 5. Trim and polish Once you finally have a draft that youre happy with, one that conveys everything that you want it to say, you should give it a good polish. Remember, you should adhere to any word limits required by the college/university, as failure to follow directions is seen as unsavory by admissions officers. (Often, youll have no choice but to remain within the word count because the online platform will not let you enter more than is allowed.) Also check to make sure that your essays are error- and typo-free! The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.

Dealing With Passive-Aggressive Behavior - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Dealing With Passive-Aggressive Behavior - Introvert Whisperer Dealing With Passive-Aggressive Behavior I had someone ask me a great question this week. âWhat do you do with a passive-aggressive person that makes snotty remarks, sighs and rolls their eyes?â Iâd love to hear what your solutions are to this question. While I think most of the time you simply ignore someone who does this, you do have to think through whether or not that type of behavior should be allowed to continue. Itâs not productive and as the recipient, it feels disrespectful. It does nothing to solve problems or build a relationship. All it does is repel you as its not comfortable being around someone who does this. Eventually, it will negatively impact how you do your work. People that are passive-aggressive donât feel empowered to directly confront concerns they have â" for whatever reason. Maybe they donât know how to comfortably address issues they have with you or are concerned that if they do, they will damage the relationship. The deal is, they donât realize they are damaging the relationship by their behavior. Here are a couple of my suggestions: Act confused and ask for clarity. âIâm confused. By your reaction, it seems something has you upset but Iâm not sure I know what it is. Could you let me know?â Be transparent and describe what is going on. âI can tell from the eye rolling youâre doing that you must disagree. Let me know if you see issues that I may not be aware of.â Or âI doubt that your comment was designed to really solve a problem. Do we have a problem that needs to be discussed?â Passive-aggressive behavior is a learned behavior. That means that a person that does this sort of thing may not stop what they are doing. I do think you train people on how you want to be treated and if you allow someone to do something repeatedly to you that goes against your values, it will continue and get worse. They will think twice before attempting it with you again if you confront the behavior in a constructive way. No, it would be great if everyone were upbeat and happy each day you go to work, but thatâs not always possible. I hope this gives you a few ideas if or when this happens to you. If you want to find out more, consider readi ng our other articles on the topic or getting yoga therapy sessions from one of the private yoga teachers or tutors on Superprof! There are a lot of different types of yoga available and three main types of yoga tutorial available on Superprof: face-to-face, online, and group. Each type of tutorial comes with a set of pros and cons and what's right for one person may not be right for another. You need to think carefully about choosing the right tutor and the right type of private tutorial.Face-to-face tutorials are between you and your tutor; there's nobody else there. This is great if you require highly-tailored yoga therapy, for example. However, as a bespoke and tailored service, these tutorials tend to be the most costly per hour. With your tutor dedicating every minute of the session to you, they're also the most cost-effective type of tutorial.Online tutorials, while usually better for academic subjects, can be quite useful if you're on a budget. Since the tutor doesn't have to travel and can also schedule more sessions per week, they have the potential to earn more and spend less and can charge a more competitive rate for their tutorials. If you prefer a hands-on approach, these tutorials won't be for you, but if you have a decent webcam, microphone, and internet connection, you can get quality and tailored tutorials without having to break the bank. Finally, group tutorials are similar to traditional yoga therapy sessions and you won't be the only person there. With multiple attendees footing the bill, these tend to be cheaper per person per hour than the other types of tutorial but it does mean that the lessons won't be tailored for you. Since most yoga therapy is geared towards a specific condition or ailment, most of you there will have the same needs and goals. This means you can all benefit from affordable private tutoring and yoga therapy and maybe even make some new friends.Have a look around on the website for different tutors and make sure you m ake the most of the tutors that offer the first hour of tuition for free! What Subjects Are Covered in the Food Technology Curriculum
What Subjects Are Covered in the Food Technology Curriculum The Standard Course List for a Food Technology Degree ChaptersAn Outline of Courses For Year OneYear Two Curriculum ChoicesYear Three Study ProgrammePoints to Consider When Choosing ClassesToday, we start our dissertation by admitting to a bit of hubris.Universities across the UK offer food-related degrees and each of them proposes a slightly different curriculum.Besides that, the field of food science technology is so vast that we could hardly begin to know where to start describing it, let alone advocating for one course of study over all of the others. Finally, there is you: are you more interested in food technology or does food microbiology really get it for you? Do you have a soft spot for food chemistry, food preservation or do you just really want to know about human nutrition?Obviously, we couldnât possibly list the syllabus of every single university that offers a degree in food technology; this article would be far too long! What we can do, though, is list the core subjects you will be expected to complete and also present el ectives you might choose to round out your studies. So⦠maybe not hubris, after all. Your Superprof stands guilty of plotting an ambitious plan to help you choose which path to follow for your undergraduate program, thatâs all! It seems you are ready for your first year of study in food science and nutrition but have you considered these courses? Image by ????????? ???? from PixabayThis course list, reflecting the first year of study, apply to degrees in food science, food technology with bioprocessing, nutrition and food science, and nutrition with food consumer science. Were you angling more towards a food science with business degree, your core course list would include classes in economics, introductory courses in management and marketing, along with other courses listed above.Optional CoursesTo round out your studies, you would have a choice of electives for all of the food sciences degrees save perhaps for a degree in nutrition.Again, the elective courses available to you depend on the degree plan you choose. If you aim for a Food Science degree, you may get to select from:Introduction to NeuroscienceIntroduction to MarketingIntroduction to ManagementFundamental Concepts in Chemistry 1Economics 1Percept ionYou might wonder what a class in perception entails and how it relates to food science. The taste, smell and appearance of food is very important; usually, people will not eat something that does not appeal to them or runs contrary to their dietary norms.Haggis, that iconic Scottish dish, is a fine example of how the perception of a food can deter people from eating it.Labelling the ingredients âoffalâ gives people a reason to turn away from the dish because, when we think of offal, it generally means 'that which is cast off'.The science behind food perception is why so many people who visit Beijing post pictures of grilled scorpions and crickets sold a food vendor stalls with expressions ranging from wonder to disgustâ¦And most likely why food scientists would have a hard time convincing people in Britain to incorporate protein-packed insects in their diet as a substitute for meat.Do you wonder, when you train to become a food technologist, whether such subjects would be cov ered? If things get too tough in your biotechnology course, you can count on a Superprof tutor to help advance your studies! Image by Nicholas Jackson from PixabayYear Two Curriculum ChoicesIf you thought your first year at university was intense because of all the science subjects you studied, hold on to your hats because Year Two will really drill down to the smallest particles involved in food studies. For instance, if youâve set yourself on the food scientist degree path, you will study:microbiological hazards in foodthe microbiology of food preservation and spoilagebiochemistry and enzymologythe composition and properties of foodsindustrial training preparationfood processingfundamentals of human nutritionAs you can surely see by the list of core courses, the Year Two food science trainee will discover a full spectrum of food-related topics from microorganisms that impact food to how food is processed, both in a manufacturing plant and in our bodies.Just as in Year One, the food tech nology studentâs mandatory courses and electives arenât quite so ominous-sounding.For example, rather than studying enzymology, you may instead choose process engineering principles, an eye-opening course that will better prepare you for working in a food processing plant. Also, your optional courses are a bit more diverse; you may, for example, study sports and exercise nutrition or learn about food choice and regulation. As we understand it, that last is about consumers choosing foods and regulating their food intake, not about government standards regarding food.Year Three Study ProgrammeWould you be relieved to know that, by the time you enter your third year of study to become a food technologist, most of the difficult subjects will be behind you?In your last year of study as an undergraduate, your work will become more cerebral and reflective, pondering such topics as:Quality assurance and food safetyaspects of food chemistryresearch methods for nutritional and food science sproduct developmentDiet and diseasesensory evaluation of foodOf these, the last one seems most fascinating! As youâll remember, in Year One, you will study food perception â" a captivating subject in itself. In your last year, you will delve deeper, exploring how our senses make snap decisions about the foods we eat. When thinking about this topic, I can think of no better food to evaluate than âstinky tofuâ, a dish found primarily in China and Taiwan. It is so pungent you can smell it from blocks away and woe to you if someone happens to walk past with a bowl of it; its less-than-fragrant bouquet tends to linger long after the offending tofu is gone.Even Andrew Zimmern, the culinary expert that travels the world sampling all manner of strange foods for his Bizarre Foods programme declared he couldnât eat stinky tofu!Again this year, you will have a bevvy of subjects to choose from that will round out your undergraduate studies; consumer attitudes towards food quality being e specially pertinent just now.Have you seen the news recently? In the US, there is currently an expanded recall on romaine lettuce from a particular region in California; it is thought to be contaminated with a strain of E-coli.Thanks to modern food transportation systems, that lettuce has made its way across the country and has further been used in food processing plants to make ready-to-eat salads and sushi.Meanwhile, here in the UK, our Foods Standards Agency has listed recalls on assorted products due to inaccurate labelling â" omitting potential allergens from the ingredients list, and Darwinâs Dairy recalled its products because they discovered a breakdown in their pasteurising process. If public health and safety are important to you, you may enjoy taking a course in customerâs attitudes toward food quality or a food and toxicology elective in your final year.Your turn to talk: what is your understanding of a food technologistâs job? Although the science research facilities and other teaching facilities are important, your curriculum should bear more weight when considering a school Image by Nikolay Georgiev from PixabayPoints to Consider When Choosing ClassesThe schools we investigated all had comprehensive food technologist study programs but each one made it clear that, due to the impact on public health and safety, students who graduate from their schools are encouraged to seek an apprenticeship with a food concern rather than full-time employment.Unlike many professions, a graduate with a food technologist degree will not be hired outright for a position of responsibility. That being the case, you may consider spending an extra year as an undergraduate, in a work-study programme. Several universities around the UK offer such programmes but you have to enquire about them and sign up.If a Bachelorâs degree is all you have time and energy for (and there is nothing wrong with that), such a work-study plan would present you with career opportunities you might not otherwise have available to you. However, if you intend to move on to a graduate program, consider the fact that your undergraduate electives take on additional weight. For instance, if you plan on specialising in Food Technology as a graduate student, selecting lifestyle and nutrition courses as your electives would probably not serve you well even though they would be quite interesting. As a student of food science and technology, you will have a lot to consider, from which branch of the discipline you would most like to make your mark to which courses will satisfy your intellectual curiosity while bringing you closer to your dream job.Hopefully, we helped inform you a bit about the choices youâre facing. Now read all about food science technologyâ¦
ACT - English Overview and Basic Strategies
ACT - English Overview and Basic Strategies ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog This article provides a quick overview of critical information to know and key strategies to apply to boost your performance on the ACT-English test. It is organized around three sections: overview, strategies, and concepts. A. ACT-English Section Overview Timing: 75 questions in 45 minutes 15 questions every 9 minutes Skills tested:Usage/grammar and rhetorical skills B. Strategies to employ General strategies for the ACT-English section Donât waste too much time on any single question. Every question is worth the same amount, regardless of difficulty. Go mostly in order. Answer all questions in a section before moving on to the next one. Strategy for usage/grammar questions Read each answer in the context of the sentence. Eliminate answers that are obviously wrong. Look for patterns in the remaining answers. If no obvious grammatical issues in the remaining choices, choose the most concise, to-the-point answer. Strategy for rhetorical skills questions When a question asks you to put something into context of the paragraph/passage, quickly read over the paragraph (or skim the passage) and be able to sum it up in a single sentence. This will often directly relate to the answer. C. Concepts to grasp 1. Paralell structure - having the same pattern of words, phrases, or clauses. Example 1: Not Parallel:Mary likes hiking, swimming, andto ridea bicycle. Parallel:Mary likes hiking, swimming, and ridinga bicycle. Example 2: Not Parallel:The teacher said that he was a poor student because he waiteduntil the last minute to study for the exam, completedhis lab problems in a careless manner, andhis motivation waslow. Parallel:The teacher said that he was a poor student because he waiteduntil the last minute to study for the exam, completedhis lab problems in a careless manner, and lackedmotivation. 2. - Misplaced modifier - word or phrase that is improperly separated from the word it describes. Example 1: Unclear: On her way home, Jan found a gold man's watch. Clear: On her way home, Jan found a man's gold watch. Unclear: The waiter served a dinner roll to the woman that was well buttered. Clear: The waiter served a dinner roll that was well buttered to the woman. 3. Transitional phrases - the ACT loves transitional words and phrases. Examples include but, and, yet, however, nonetheless, and furthermore. If you notice that all of the answer choices are transition words/phrases, read the sentence before the transition and the sentence after it and determine how they are related. 4. Comma splice â" connecting two full sentences with a comma. Example 1: Comma splice: It is nearly half past five, we cannot reach town before dark. Fixed version 1 (using semi-colon): It is nearly half past five; we cannot reach town before dark. Fixed version 2 (using dash): It is nearly half past five â" we cannot reach town before dark. Fixed version 3 (using colon): We cannot reach town before dark: it is nearly half past five. Fixed version 4 (using two sentences): It is nearly half past five. We cannot reach town before dark. Fixed version 5 (inserting a conjunction): It is nearly half past five, so we cannot reach town before dark Hopefully you are now on your way to preparing for the ACT-English section.
Does Fidgeting Help Kids with ADHD Focus
Does Fidgeting Help Kids with ADHD Focus Have you noticed that many kids with ADHD seem to move and fidget constantly when they are doing their homework or are sitting at a desk in their classroom, no matter how many times theyve been told to sit still or stay in their seat? Have you also noticed that these same kids seem to have no problem sitting still when theyre watching a movie or playing a videogame? This stark contrast in behavior perplexes and frustrates many teachers and parents. It gives the impression that kids with ADHD are able to sit still when they want to and only move constantly at other times because theyre trying to avoid doing their schoolwork or escape a boring situation, or because they are simply being defiant. A team of researchers had a different idea. What if the fidgeting and constant movement actually serves a purpose? What if moving actually helps kids with ADHD focus on their work, think more clearly, and stay alert and engaged when they are doing something that is not particularly interesting to them? To test this theory Dr. Rapport and his students developed a series of studies that precisely measured the movements of elementary school-aged boys with ADHD in two different scenarios. In the first scenario, the boys sat and watched a movie, which is an activity that most people can focus on fairly effortlessly. In the second scenario, the boys completed computer-based tasks that required them to concentrate and use their working memory working memory is what allows us to store information in our mind for short periods of time and use the stored information to do things like calculate math problems in our head. During the movie there was very little movement from the boys with ADHD, but as soon as they switched gears and started their working memory computer tasks the amount of movement increased dramatically. The boys without ADHD moved a bit more during the working memory tasks than they did during the movie, but not nearly as much as their ADHD counterparts. In a follow-up study, the researchers looked more closely at how movement impacted the boys level of accuracy on the working memory tasks. Sure enough, for most of the boys with ADHD, the more they moved the more accurately they performed! The opposite was true for the boys without ADHD. Their accuracy actually decreased the more that they moved. Why does movement helps kids with ADHD perform better? Its probably tied to the fact that the brains of kids with ADHD need more stimulation in order to click into gear and focus than the brains of kids without ADHD. So, when an activity isnt very interesting or stimulating, kids with ADHD need an extra push to get their brains working, and moving their bodies gives their brains the push that they need. Everyone actually experiences this sometimes. Next time youre in a boring meeting or are really feeling like you need another cup of coffee, pay attention to your body. Youll probably find yourself fidgeting or moving around in an effort to stay alert and engaged. The difference for kids with ADHD is that they feel like this on a daily basis. So, does this mean that we should stop telling kids with ADHD to stay in their seat and sit still? If a child is in a situation where their movement isnt distracting to other kids around them, and theyre staying on task and getting their work done, then I would recommend allowing them to keep moving. If the child is in a classroom and other kids are getting distracted, or the childs desk has to be moved away from his peers because of his movement, then the answer isnt as straightforward. In classroom situations it can be helpful to find tools that allow kids to move or fidget without disrupting the group. Different tools work for different kids, so finding the right option might take some trial and error. In general I recommend fidget tools that can be attached to desks or chairs rather than loose fidget objects that can be lost or turn into distracting toys. Bouncy Bands attach to chairs and desk legs and can help facilitate quiet feet and leg movement (http://bouncybands.com/). Or, if a standing desk is an option at your childs school, many come with a fidget bar already installed that is similar to a swinging footrest. For kids who fidget with their hands a simple strip of Velcro attached to the bottom of the desk can be a good sensory fidget tool. Next time you see your child fidgeting or moving during homework time, spend some time observing him before you decide whether or not you should tell him to sit still. The movement might just be helping him build up the brain power he needs in order to concentrate and do his work well. ABOUT DR.
